Art Lit

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up" -- Pablo Picasso

Art Literacy (nicknamed Art Lit) is a district-run, volunteer-supported art education program at nearly every BSD elementary and middle school. Volunteers teach six art lessons a year, with an emphasis on inclusivity and representation of the diverse world around us. Students learn about both artists and art styles and then create their own art projects based on the lessons. In the spring, we turn McKay Elementary into Museum McKay and host Art Night, where families can come and admire the projects students have created throughout the year.

Art Lit is only possible with the commitment of our dedicated volunteers. We can always use more volunteers! Volunteers do not need any special knowledge or skills -- NO ART SKILLS NEEDED! You will attend a 1-hour presentation at McKay where you will hear the lesson you will be teaching and also do the art project yourself. You will be provided the necessary training, lessons and materials. Volunteers just need to have a desire to help students expand their world through art.
