The McKay Green Team

McKay Elementary is excited to announce the creation of The Green Team! This new student-led initiative will focus on promoting environmental awareness and sustainability within our school community. The Green Team will work on projects aimed at reducing waste, conserving resources, and educating students and staff about the importance of protecting our planet.

We invite all students in 4th and 5th grades to join; interested students can ask their teachers for an application. Meetings will be facilitated by McKay parents and staff and are held during lunch time on the first Wednesday of every month. While Green Team club meetings are currently for 4th and 5th grade students, we hope to have school-wide initiatives and activities that ALL our students can take part in!

We welcome all parent involvement and ideas! If you'd like to get involved or have ideas or questions, contact Lauren at josie501@gmail.com

Trex Recycling Challenge

The McKay Green Team has launched its first initiative: the Trex Recycling Challenge! Trex is a nationwide company that takes in thin, loose, stretchy plastics and recycles it into decking and outdoor furniture. If we can collect 1,000 pounds of this plastic by December 31, 2025, McKay will earn a free bench from Trex!

Students can start bringing in this plastic now! Bins are located in the front office and cafeteria. Plastic must be clean, dry and free of food residue. Examples: ziplock bags, produce bags, grocery bags, cereal bags, plastic shipping envelopes, bread bags, and bubble wrap, to name a few. If you use Ridwell, it's the same plastic that goes in your film bag!

Eco-School Network

The McKay Green Team is part of the Eco-School Network, a local organization of students, parents, teachers, and school staff promoting sustainable practices and raising ecological awareness in elementary schools in Oregon. Check out what other Portland-metro schools have been doing!
